What this calculator does and does not tell you
- It restates an amount in another period’s dollars using a published price index. It is a historical comparison, not a forecast.
- CPI-U tracks a national average basket for urban consumers. Your own costs depend on what you actually buy and where you live, and can differ substantially.
- The series is not seasonally adjusted, so short monthly comparisons can reflect normal seasonal patterns rather than a lasting change in prices.
- Comparisons spanning many decades cross real changes in CPI methodology and in what the basket contains. The arithmetic is exact; the interpretation is not a statement about equivalent living standards.
- BLS did not publish an All Items CPI-U observation for October 2025. That month is absent here and is never filled in with an estimate.
